REGINALD ANTHONY NEWARK

When and why did you decide to join the military and where were you located when you made this decision?

I wanted to go to college and serve my country. I lived in Brooklyn when I made the decision.

Where did you serve during your time in uniform?

Iraq, Afghanistan.

What were some of your key memories during your time of service?

I won a Purple Heart. I helped people get out of danger. In Afghanistan, enemies were on the ground, and I did what had to be done. In Iraq, there was forcible entry.

What is an important value that you took away from your military experience?

It's one of the best things I ever did in my life. I was very brave. A body is not meant to jump out of planes and carry heavy weapons, but I did all of that. I served with the best group of people - the 82nd airborne. We were all strong and moral. I learned what the body is capable of doing. I gained an increased faith in God. Today, it's harder for vets to get services and it's getting worse.

What advice would you give someone interested in joining the military?

I wouldn't advise people to go into the military with the lack of services and with the state of the world today.
