ROBERTO ORTIZ

When and why did you decide to join the military and where were you located when you made this decision?

Grew up in the Bronx. Saw photos of my mom's cousin who died in Vietnam. I joined the marines because he had been in Vietnam. He served his country. I wanted to do the same.

Where did you serve during your time in uniform?

Camp LeJeune, NC, S America fighting the War on Drugs, Columbia, Paraguay, Narcoguerrilas. I was in the Marine Corps for 4 years 1 month.

What were some of your key memories during your time of service?

Best friends I ever made, even to this day. We knew each other when we were young and single. Now we are grandparents. We can see the trajectory in life.

What is an important value that you took away from your military experience?

Marine Corps was a first step in learning to make good decisions. Patriotism - I would do anything for my country. Developed selfless mentality. Leadership, work with others. Discipline in the Marine Corps which I took with me everywhere.

What advice would you give someone interested in joining the military?

Assume you are going to do the right thing. Jobs will follow because future employers will assume you know how to follow directions. Marine Corps saved my life. I knew I couldn't let myself fail. Marine Corps is my only chance. I saw different races, southerners, culture shock, people from different backgrounds, people from small towns, people who got a kick out of activities like cow tipping. Curious practices.
