MICHAEL ROBINSON
When and why did you decide to join the military and where were you located when you made this decision?
I saw an army jacket hanging in our closet - didn't know whose it was - and I knew I wanted to join. I lived I Brooklyn.
Where did you serve during your time in uniform?
I served in Crete, Greece and Okinawa, Japan.
What were some of your key memories during your time of service?
Airforce taught me to be a dental assistant. I did this for 6 years. I then served as a jet engine mechanic for 14 years. I always want to join and I was glad I did. The Airforce is the first thing I ever was proud of. In basic training, I was so proud to salute the flag. I have negative memories too - the "good old boy network." As a Black man, promotions were limited. Overseas, the Americans were horrible. I preferred living among the Greeks in Crete. In Japan, the Americans called me derogatory names and it was hard getting used to all the prejudice. Crete was the best experience. I would go back there in a minute if I could.
What is an important value that you took away from your military experience?
Be proud of your country, value living with foreigners.
What advice would you give someone interested in joining the military?
Join up. Everyone should join for 2 years after high school. It teaches responsibility.
