When and why did you decide to join the military and where were you located when you made this decision?
1955. GI bill was ending and I got into the military to pay for college. I was in NYC.
Where did you serve during your time in uniform?
Oklahoma for aviation, NJ for weather school, parachute rigging. Aircraft carrier in the Coral Sea in Norfolk, VA, Cuba, 6th fleet in the Mediterranean, all around South America, Japan. I served for 3 years 3 months.
What were some of your key memories during your time of service?
Going across the equator. In Japan, visiting Kyoto, Hiroshima. Also worked in the foreign service and International trade. I spent time in Venezuela, Miami, Turkey, India, Amman, Jordan. Navy reserve, Worked for the national Weather Magazine (1958), missile project.
What is an important value that you took away from your military experience?
Opportunity to see the world. Living overseas, meeting different kinds of people. Got an MBA in International Trade.
What advice would you give someone interested in joining the military?
If you want to find a good trade, travel, discipline, get training for a field, military is an excellent way to do it. My grandson enlisted and he is in aviation electronics.
